Eric was a young French policeman who came to see me, ready to change his profession. He said that being a policeman no longer fulfilled him. After a session, he decided to become a firefighter, and in less than a year he had joined the fire department in his city.

Having only had one session with me, he had not fully explored the possibilities that his life had to offer and had not discovered what his real mission was. Two years later, he came back to me to continue his evolutionary work because his new profession did not completely satisfy him, either. Although the money was good, and it allowed him considerable leisure time, he felt something was still missing.

He quickly realized that what he had always wanted to do was act, to be an actor. His humble origins had led him to view these aspirations as a simple dream, a sign of immaturity, something beyond his reach. This time, he didn’t hesitate and embarked on regular acting and English classes in addition to his work as a firefighter. With every passing day, he felt happier and more alive.

A few months ago, he took a step that years ago would have been unthinkable: he went to Los Angeles to perfect his language skills and study acting. His surprise was all the greater when he realized that his mission was not only to act and trigger emotions in others but to serve as an example to his biological parents and sister. His humble parents and sister, never having been out of their home town, found their curiosity and desire to enjoy life awakened simply by watching Eric travel to distant places and follow his dream. A week ago, the young man called me to tell me that his parents, having saved up some money, had decided that once retired they would travel and discover the world.

It is true that for Eric, a young and single man without family obligations, making changes in his profession was less complicated than for those saddled with more responsibility. Sometimes, I am faced with heads of families who are burdened with heavy loans and mortgages, feel frustrated in their jobs, and wish to change directions. They are afraid that they will lose the income provided by their present profession, but above all else, they fear encountering the disapproval of their significant others and relatives.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve ignored your mission, there are always ways of combining it with your current life or finding creative ways to manifest it.
